Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your visit to Haughhead Stables in the Scottish Borders. Find answers to common questions about bookings, riding experiences, and what to expect on the day.

How do I book a ride?

You can book a ride by contacting us directly via telephone at 07841601257, via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/haughheadstables or by sending an enquiry to info@haughheadstables.co.uk. We will confirm availability and secure your chosen date and time.

How do I pay?

All rides are cash only. Please note that full payment must be made in cash before mounting.

Are deposits required?

Deposits may be required to secure your booking. Deposits are generally required for new customers and for all outings. Your booking is not confirmed until the required deposit has been received.

What should I wear?

We recommend comfortable trousers or leggings (avoid jeans with thick inner seams) and sturdy boots or shoes with a small heel. Please dress suitably for outdoor Scottish weather, including waterproof jackets when needed. Riding hats must be worn when mounted. If you do not have your own hat, we have a selection available to borrow.

Do I need riding experience?

No prior experience is necessary. We cater to riders of all stages, from complete first-timers through to confident, experienced equestrians.

What riding experiences are available?

We offer lead rein rides, walk rides, walk and trot sessions, experienced hacks, canter and confidence hacks, pony care sessions, children’s activities, outings, and longer seasonal hacks across the Borders.

Do you cater for complete beginners?

Yes, absolutely. We offer gentle lead rein rides and introductory walk rides designed specifically to build comfort and confidence in a supportive, relaxed environment.

Are there age or weight restrictions?

For rider safety, horse welfare and insurance purposes, riders must be ages 4 years or over. Our maximum rider weight is strictly 14 stone (89kg). Please contact us before booking if you have any questions regarding rider suitability.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Riding takes place outdoors in most weather conditions. In cases of severe or unsafe weather, rides may need to be rescheduled. If severe or unsafe weather means a ride cannot go ahead, we will contact riders to let them know. Safety of our riders and horses will always come first.

How early should I arrive?

We ask riders to arrive approximately 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. This gives you time to check in, complete paperwork, pay in cash, and be fitted for equipment.

Can friends or family come to watch?

Friends and family are welcome to come along for our 30 minute, 1 hour walk and walk / trot rides. As we do not have designated spectator areas, they are welcome to walk alongside the ride instead. For longer or more advanced rides, spectators are unable to accompany or watch the ride.

Can groups book together?

Yes, group bookings are available and are subject to availability. Please contact us in advance with your group size and riding experience so we can arrange suitable horses and the most appropriate ride for your group.

Do you offer pony parties?

Yes, we host pony parties for all ages, including pony grooming, care activities, and rides. Please visit our Pony Parties page for more information, or contact us directly to discuss package options and availability.
